Cantar del Alma

It is with great pleasure that Art Loft Lisbon presents on October 25th at 6pm another recital by mezzo-soprano Helena Ressurreição and pianist António Areal.

The title of the first song by Catalan composer F. Mompou, Cantar del Alma, is the theme of this intelligently structured recital programme, almost like a cycle of interconnected songs.

We will hear a range of songs by composers such as the aforementioned F. Mompou, R. Hans, M. Ravel, also marking the 150th anniversary of the birth of this famous French composer, Viana da Motta, S. Rachmaninoff, L. Delibes and E. Granados. These songs feature poems by essential authors of literature such as Victor Hugo, Alfred de Musset, Michel-Dimitr Calvocoressi (also a musician), Leconte de Lisle, Roland de Marés, F. Yodurtiutchev and Almeida Garret.

The titles, poems and music of these songs, written between the late 19th and mid-20th centuries, transport us to a loving atmosphere of very particular intimacy. Here, we need only mention a few titles that convey this idea: Cantar del Alma, J’ai mis ma levre, Ballade de la Reine morte d’amour, Olhos Negros, L’abas ver l’Eglise, Damunt de tu nome les flors, are good examples of this trend.

Many of these songs are part of song cycles, such as Rachmaninoff's Spring Waters, belonging to the cycle 12 Romances po. 14, Gracias mia, from Granados' Canciones Amatorias cycle (based on Spanish folk melodies), Néère from R. Hans’s Estudes Lantines cycle and Damunt de tu nomé le flor from Mompou's Combat del Somni cycle.

Rachmaninoff's Spring Waters (which, interestingly, is also the title of one of the first novels by the great Russian writer Ivan Turgenev), along with the song Les Filles de Cadix by French composer L. Delibes, are the two central songs in this programme of more expansive and perhaps even explosive energy, contrasting with the rest, starting with Cantar del Alma, which are presented to us as extremely delicate works carrying an intense emotional delicacy.

As we said at the beginning, this recital, Cantar del Alma, is confined to a very personal spiritual space. In a way, we seem to be timidly invited to enter a secret garden, where here and there, through music and poetry, we discover the fragility and delicacy of the flower that each song symbolises. Allowing itself to blossom at the moment of listening, revealing the magical world within, only to close in on itself again in silence. Impossible for the listener to pick, it leaves only its scent of sound lingering in the air. As Victor Hugo writes in the last line of the second song, J’ai dans l’âme une fleur que nul ne peut cueillir!

António AREAL - Barcelona. Sant Pau Recinto Modernista. 1–III-2025.

Louise Alder, soprano. Konstantin Krimmel, barítono, Joseph Middleton, piano. Hugo Wolf: Italienisches Liederbuch

"As a prelude to Wolf's Italian Songbook, the young Portuguese pianist António Areal—trained at the ESMUC in Barcelona, among other institutions—offered a recital dedicated to Haydn's Sonata No. 62 HOB XVI 52, Schumann's Fantasia in C major, and the Liebestod from Wagner/Liszt's Tristan und Isolde. A pianist of solid technique and musicality worthy of note, he maintained the robustness and passion of the first two movements of Schumann's work, then launched into the Lento sostenuto with a delightful touch, which sublimates the Fantasia. A version of the Liebestod with countless sonic nuances, well-crafted in the construction of the dynamics, demonstrated the technical quality and enormous musicality possessed by this young Portuguese pianist".
