DOUBLE ON THE BRIM is a music project born from the convergence of Montreal based improvisers Karoline Leblanc and Paulo J Ferreira Lopes with Lisbon based improvisers Yedo Gibson, Luís Vicente and Miguel Mira.
"Experimental jazz and free improvisation are the main compounds, but the musicians are searching links to other jazz styles. The music is related to expressive and nervous bebop, aggressive hysteric hard bop, modern and dynamic contemporary jazz, steady cool or any other style.
Huge range of extended playing techniques is created here – that makes a relation with contemporary academical and experimental music, sonoristic music or even repetitive ascetic minimalistic samples.
An innovative and bright instrumental section is mostly based on experimental ways of playing, extended playing techniques, special effects and sonoristic experiments which make a great fusion with some very well-known ways of playing.
A melody line is charming and simply fantastic – it’s kept by saxophones, trumpet and piano....
...Booming culminations, dramatic hysteric riffs, vibrant breaking sessions, silent pauses, light and subtle pieces, slow steady beats and huge range of ornaments and timbres are organically brought together.
All musicians are improvising with drive, joy and expression – that makes astonishing, inspiring and touching sound..."

KAROLINE LEBLANC - piano
photo: Pierre Langlois
Canadian pianist/improviser Karoline Leblanc has studied violin, harpsichord and organ at the Music Conservatories of Rimouski, Québec and Montréal. Early captivated by contemporary classical music, she played many world premieres by Canadian composers. Since 1998, through intuiti personae sound meetings with improvisors, she has been searching for new reactions and expressions in open forms fully devoting herself to the unconstrained, favoring the piano as her main instrument.
''Leblanc trips over keys and chords on her own authentic creative odyssey.''
Dora Dubber, Discorder Magazine

YEDO GIBSON - soprano, alto & tenor saxophones
Saxophonist Yedo Gibson is the founder of the Royal Improvisers Orchestra of Amsterdam where he served as artistic director for 10 years. He brought his music to all corners of the planet, from China to Brazil, alongside Han Bennink, Luc Ex, Hamid Drake, Vasco Trilla, Steve Noble and many other renown musicians from the free jazz scene. Recently he moved from Amsterdam to Sintra where he fosters various musical projects.
"Gibson and Vicente use a language that is anything but commonplace. They dismiss conventional melody and motifs, even simple notes, for something different. Animalistic hums and roars, throaty rattling, little squeaks, plops and puffs. Their approach is one of shrill overtones, simmering saliva and ecstatic bird calls. Turn it up and you will find yourself in a deranged zoo. Play it backwards, and who knows what kind of madness you will encounter. The thing is that they turn a whole bunch of conventions upside down, but do it with a distinct flavor and near-combustible intensity, avoiding ready-made clichés."

MIGUEL MIRA - cello
photo: Petra Cvelbar
Miguel Mira plays the cello and is one of the most active Portuguese improvisers. With more that 40 years of musical restlessness he is a paradigm of Lisbon's free music. He collaborates regularly with Ernesto Rodrigues and Rodrigo Amado. It is with the latter that he has gained international notoriety, touring extensively, and playing live and in studio with musicians like Jeb Bishop and Peter Evans.
"Mira’s cello, played plucked throughout, higher in register and lighter in tone than the double-bass, making the frequent and rapid gear changes, glissandi and double-stops more prominent."
Colin Green - Free Jazz Collective (Reviews of Free Jazz and Improvised Music)
LUIS VICENTE - trumpet
"Luís Vicente has spread his talent in collaborations with numerous national and international musicians. The trumpeter, composer and improviser has collaborated on projects such as Fail Better !, Clocks & Clouds, Frame Trio, Vincent & Marjamaki, Twenty One 4tet, In Layers, Deux Maisons and What About Sam?, Among others. Most recently he joined a quartet that brought together historical names of free jazz, William Parker and Hamid Drake."
A forma do JAZZ, by Nuno Catarino, Harvest 2019: Parallel Realities
“The component manifests most obviously in Vicente's trumpet, (...) Of course, the trumpeter also splutters and exclaims explosively. But whatever he does packs charge.”
John Sharpe, All About Jazz
“One of the joys of listening to him play: he’s got an undeniable ear for melody, but he’s also not afraid to draw all of the primal physicality out of his horn - sometimes he sputters, sometimes he spits out lines with acerbic intensity, but he always keeps your attention.”
Derek Stone, The Free Jazz Collective
