What they said about them.

Paul Bream from Jazz North East with his "three" favourites from 2018.
"Luís Vicente, Olie Brice & Mark Sanders - One of those wonderful occasions when three musi-cians come together for the first time and immediately find a common language of the highest imaginative creativity. For Portuguese trumpeter Vicente this was his first ever UK gig, and he’d never previously played with either Brice or Sanders, but the rapport was tremendous, delivering music that was completely free yet shot through with spontaneous melodicism."
Vortex Jazz Club, London, Feb'18.
Luis’ first meeting with Vortex regulars Olie Brice and Mark Sanders.
"Trumpeter Vicente is a significant emerging talent, a brassy, forceful trumpeter with a quick mind…” Stuart Broomer, Point Of Departure.
Ken Drew, New Castle Gateshead, Feb'18:
"three world-class improvisers!"
Luis Vicente

“The component manifests most obviously in Vicente's trumpet, (...) Of course, the trumpeter also splutters and exclaims explosively. But whatever he does packs charge.” John Sharpe, All About Jazz
“... one of the joys of listening to him play: he’s got an undeniable ear for melody, but he’s also not afraid to draw all of the primal physicality out of his horn - sometimes he sputters, sometimes he spits out lines with acerbic intensity, but he always keeps your attention.” Derek Stone, The Free Jazz Collective
Luís Vicente is a Portugese trumpet player, improviser and composer. He has recorded several times for the Clean Feed label and works with the likes of John Dikeman, Rodrigo Amado and Wilbert De Joode. This tour will be Luis’ continues a collaboration with Olie Brice and Mark Sanders that began in 2017. “Trumpeter Vicente is a significant emerging talent, a brassy, forceful trumpeter with a quick mind…” Stuart Broomer, Point Of Departure, for SAFEHOUSE.
Olie Brice

“Brice makes the entire body of his bass sing. He has the ability to deliver a fractal line that is as purposeful as any by the great jazz bassists, but to do so within an entirely abstract setting” – BrianMorton, Point of Departure “Imaginative and adventurous” – London Jazz News
"Olie Brice plays bass as if he’s jumped onto a bear’s back to throttle it but then tries to Greco-Roman wrestle it to the ground. It is mesmerizing because there is no way to predict who will win. His pizzicato pounds like a battering ram knocking down doors, or taps like a hammer on notes like nails. His bowing bounces and stutters, then soars and dives to rip open space.
Few bassists leave me as awestruck as Olie Brice. Hearing it is, to me, like standing in front of a large-scale Pollock or Rothko. The effect is overwhelming - physically, intellectually, emotionally - yet without my being able to describe exactly why. Of Tides is by far the most compelling album I have heard in 2017" - Reviews of Free Jazz and Improvised Music, by Rick Joines.
Olie Brice is not just an innovator of the new generation of bass players and as a foundation of bands such as Entropi, but also as a leader of his own band, and also bringing into to the Vortex some musicians who don’t (but should) play here enough, such as with Achim Kaufmann, Kirk Knuffke and others.
“Versatile and slinking” (Peter Margasak, Downbeat, for SAFEHOUSE)
Mark Sanders

Mark Sanders has worked with a host of renowned musicians including Derek Bailey, Henry Grimes, Mathew Shipp, Evan Parker, Roswell Rudd, in duo and quartets with Wadada Leo Smith and trios with Charles Gayle with Sirone and William Parker. “Ubiquitous, diverse and constantly creative, drummer Mark Sanders always outdoes himself, whether playing with restraint or erupting like a dynamo.” Bruce L Gallenter, Downtown Music Gallery. NY (for SAFEHOUSE)
"Ambient-pop chord patterns built to a huge, clamorous anthem, driven by a towering performance from drummer Sanders".
John Fordham. The Guardian
"Drummer Mark Sanders is a gifted player capable of seamless movement between free-rhythms and propulsive swing". - The Guardian, (John Fordham)
In 2009 Sanders was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame.
This is a ONE-OF-A-KIND experience ...
