MARTA WARELIS - piano keys
Pianist Marta Warelis is a vibrant performer with a strong preference for improvisation and experimentation in all genres. She continually aims for instant composing on the basis of new sounds and influences. Her work draws inspiration from music across the globe including cumbia, angolan dance music, as well as jazz, western classical music and the various schools of free improvisation.
Born and raised in Poland where she graduated with honors from WSJiMR in Wroclaw, Marta moved to Groningen in 2010 to attend the Prince Claus Conservatory.
In 2014 she found her place in Amsterdam, very quickly becoming an active member of the local improvisers' scene. Marta has appeared frequently in Bimhuis, where in 2017 she was given a Carte Blanche in recognition of her remarkable talents.
In 2019 she became a member of Doek Collective creating opportunities for experimentation, research and performance.
She performs with a variety of creative musicians including Michael Moore, Wilbert de Joode, Ab Baars, Mike Reed, Andy Moor, Luc Ex, as well with such groups as Hupata!, Omawi, L'Orchestre Mechanicien, Polyband, Ruido Oscuro, Edge Ensemble, Xavier Pamplona, Warelis/Rosaly/Lumley/Dikeman and Bazooka.
– Omawi “Inscapes” Govaert/De Joode
– Xavier Pamplona “Play the...” Moore/Doronzo/Taubenfeld/Payne/vdWeide/Hadow
– Hupata! “Triptych” Ku/Rave
– Strings 5 “Into the Labyrinth” Plooi/Zwerver/Nijdam/vdWeide
– Nillesen/Hein/Risser/Mayas “Piano Trialogues”
“..Fast-fingered Warelis can play straight and discreet, bonk out the block chords, rattle the strings like Anton Karas's zither, spackle the keys like Nancarrow, play percussion under the hood, and unreel snaky singing right hand lines. She can mix up all that and more very quickly, as if it's all one big language. She's attentive to developing motifs but isn't afraid to drop them and move on..”
– Kevin Whitehead
“.. Warelis' improvisations are an accumulation of impressions she gleans from the ensemble while playing.. short and fierce patterns, staccato melodies and chord lines, meandring and percussive figures strike at lightning speed. Warelis' music comes from deep inside with no compromises and expresses itself in flowing, colorful patterns that immediately take root..”
We proudly announce some of the latest reviews on our jazz, improvised and contemporary music curator LUÍS VICENTE
The Free Jazz Collective Reviews of Free Jazz and Improvised Music
Reflecting upon last decade's musical influencers.
"We could have reviewed them separately, but the Portuguese guitarist Marcelo dos Reis and trumpeter Luis Vicente have created their own sound of modern improvised music, and this in various ensembles with different approaches and line-ups: free, cohesive, hypnotic and sensitive.
With Chamber 4, they won our Happy New Ears Award for 2017, and they were runner-up in 2015. I could and maybe should also have added the brothers Théo and Valentin Ceccaldi, who also played with the two Portuguese in various ensembles.”

Marcelo Dos Reis/Luis Vicente
"The first album of CHAMBER 4 (Luís Vicente - trumpet, Théo Ceccaldi - violin and voice, Valentin Ceccaldi - cello and voice , Marcelo dos Reis - acoustic guitar, prepared guitar and voice) was considered:
One of The Free Jazz Blog Collective's Top 101 Recordings of 2010S!”
