"In the particular environment of our Gallery, we will have the opportunity to enjoy a unique gender that marked strongly the romantic musical universe: the Lied.
Lied, which in German means song, is a musical gender that establishes a very intimate relation between text and music. Unabled by the enormous creativity and expansion of the German poetry of the 19th century, the elements of the romantic Lied, voice, piano and text, create an integrate and inseparable body. Here, the role of the Piano goes far beyond the sheer accompaniment, and gains a importance of a dramatic narrator of the voice. All of the romantic authors praised Nature. In the first work of the programme Liederkreis (a twelve song cicle with music by Robert Schumann), we will hear precisely that praise, as well as an inmersive and intimate musical journey with poems of Joseph Einchendorf which also speak about nature and love. Here, Nature is portrayed as something transcendente, and it’s used as an element to describe the poets states of mind and soul.
For the second half of the programme, the music redirects us to another historical context.
We will hear three songs: two from Kurt Weil, Je ne t'aime pas and Speak low; and the last song by William Bolcom, entitled George.
The German composer of Jewish family, Kurt Weil first became famous by his close collaboration with Bertolt Brecht. From this period, came one of the most important reforms in the 20th century Opera. Weil introduces in his works the Cabaret music, as well as Tango, Fox-Trot and the catchy melodies of this previous genders, that have since stayed in the audience ears. Coming from Jewish decent, his work was targeted by the German Nazy regime, which eventually forced him to leave his country and travel first to Paris, then to Switzerland and finally to the United States here he was granted citizenship and stayed.
Je ne t'aime pas, written in Paris in 1934, was composed as commissioned work, from the famous movie and Cabaret start from that time: Lys Gauty. On the other hand, Speak Low, 1943, belongs to his North American period. It ́s an extremely popular song, sang almost by every major American singers like Ella Fitzgerald and Barbara Streisand, and it’s a number of the work, One Touch of Venus, one of his most famous works.
To close this wonderful programme and recital at Art Loft Lisbon, we have George, written by William Bolcom, North American composer of the 20th century.
He is the author of an extensive number of works, from composing music for movies to Operas, Concertos, Symphonys, and Chamber Music works. Bolcom became famous through his various song cycles, which are in it’s big majority Cabaret songs.
The closing song of the programme George, belongs in this category, and with the last frase “Get Yourself a Drink”, we invite you start the second part of the night, the Dinner."
